Summer 2010 New Jersey

Broadway Kids is a summer course that is specially designed to teach the performing arts to children by actual professional performers. Our first performance, The Lion King, was very successful and well liked, so we are excited to introduce to you our current performance of Mary Poppins. We chose the piece because of its popularity as a beloved classic in the musical theater genre. The students have been preparing and working very hard over the last 2 weeks. We have been extremely busy rehearsing dancing, singing, and acting, as well as also studying many details about this show. An example of a typical day begins in the morning as soon as they come to the class room, where the children have to make some props for the show. Then they do some meditation, stretching and warm-up exercises and vocal exercises. Next they learn songs from the show, and memorize the choreography with the singing. After practicing all of that again, they have their lunch break. After the lunch break, they have to complete their hand- made props, jump into the pool for refreshment, and later perform a small preview of the show for the other class. Then they play theater games to improve their acting skill, and after that, they learn even more about the story of Mary Poppins by watching a Video or listening to the CD.

Even though they didn’t have much time to play like they normally do during the year, they told their parents how much fun they are having, and we are very pleased to hear that!

Some kids have only been participating in this program for less than a week, so please give them warm applause and welcome them. We hope you enjoy the show!
